Fall is here! Which has inspired me to read about the 72 Micro seasons of Japan and to learn that Florida’s changing seasons are not Fall, winter, spring and summer. But are described as wet and rainy or Dry. Wet for humidity in the summer, rainy for the hurricanes and dry during the cooler months. The reason I am taking such an interest is that I am exploring the Preserve which surrounds my community for signs of Fall. The temperature in the mornings and evenings have begun to drop like the North but the days can still be warm to hot. The humidity is almost gone. The hurricane season has almost parted along with tornados, winds and flooding in the area.
Spending time nature journaling allows me an opportunity to slow down and notice these subtilties. If you have never drawn directly from nature. I encourage you to try it. Grab a sketchbook and a sharpie and look at the wonder near you. The leaves where I live do not really change into the brilliant reds, oranges and yellows that I grew up with. Grab a few leaves with different shapes. Then trace the outside edges or draw them and place the leaf on top of the drawing and see what you noticed. Was the size accurate did you catch the edges of it. Play around with color matching. Explore! Extend the experience and notice where the leaf came from. Exploring trees is wonderful in fall because of the beauty Notice seed pods, acorns or wings. Do a tree rubbing and compare its bark. Reflect on seasons of the past. Jot down memories. Use your senses. Do you hear anything? Down load the Merlin Phone app and it will record the birds that are chirping by you with a name. Look around and name the changes. According to the Japanese micro season chart we are in COLD DEW Oct.8-0ctober 22 notice the Geese leaving or migrating south. Chrysanthemums available to purchase or my favorite show at Phipps Conservatory in Pittsburgh to see the Chrysanthemum /Mum show! Sit and draw them or photograph the flowers and draw them at home. There’re so many ways to enjoy the seasons. Watch on my YouTube channel videos on painting bumpy pumpkins, leaves and more.
