One of my most enjoyable winter experiences as an artist was spending time drawing at the Morton Arboretum. Attending a winter class that actually took us outside. Class spread out and we were told to bring a black garbage bag to put on top of the snow for our feet. Prepared with many layers of clothing, including a scarf around my face. The most important garment was mittens that peeled back for my fingers to be able to hold a pencil or paint brush easily. Serenity came immediately as soon as I sat in my chair. All my senses were heightened.Journaling in winter can be an awesome experience.The snow was bright white, against the dark trunks of the trees. Learning how to grid my paper was used to keep the tree in proportion. At that time I used a hardcover sketchbook to lay on my lap and colored pencils. Color could be added very quickly.This experience is one I look back on fondly and with much gratitude.
Begin with a walk, breathe, listen to the sounds and smells.Do you smell any Pine? During the walk ID the trees.There is a small pocket size book “WINTER TREE FINDER “by May Watts. Winter is the perfect time to learn about trees without leaves, notice the bark, branching patterns and future buds. Besides the trees there will be a lot of dried specimens along your way.Another reference is “Wildflowers in Winter” Illustrated by Dick Rauh. Begin a nature collection to explore.
